Scope around meter-to-cash
The utility revenue process is the spine of the program:
- Meter reading and data validation, including estimated reads.
- Rating, including tiered, time-of-use, and seasonal rates.
- Billing and invoicing at high volume.
- Payment, collections, and dunning through a contract-account subledger (FI-CA in SAP).
If the implementation plan does not center on these, it is a generic plan wearing a utility label.
Build for rate cases and regulation
Regulated utilities live with rate cases. The system has to let you model and launch new rates, and keep the audit trail regulators expect. Scope rate complexity early, because it multiplies test cases more than any other factor.
Integrate the data layer
Plan the meter data management and CIS integration as first-class work, not an afterthought. Inbound reads, device events, and market messages (often via SAP IDocs) are where high-volume billing succeeds or fails.
Add AI after the core works
